B B/A B/Ab B/A B B/A B/Ab B/A
Here on the hill above the settlement, the buildings are talking,
B B/A B/Ab B/A B B/A B/Ab B
A tower to a terrace says the word's on the street, the dead are walking...
C#m7 Amaj7 B6 (C7) C#m7 Amaj7 B6 (C7)
The brows are arched of the mews across the street,
C#m7 Amaj7 B6 (C7) C#m7 Amaj7 B6 (C7)
By a pale ochre light are made out heavy reliefs,
B7 A7 E
Where all your dreams are borrowed all your senses are thieves,
B7 A7 Ab7
And Ned Kelly won't ride past your window despite the freeze on your disbelief
C#m7 Amaj7 B6 C7
Don't bring 'em up if you can't put 'em down,
C#m7 Amaj7 B6 C7 C#m7
Thin Captain Crackers bowling naked through the centre of the town,
Amaj7 B6 C7 B7? A7
The sun won't bake his blue skin brown, he's been too long underground.
B B/A B/Ab B/A B B/A B/Ab B/A
B B/A B/Ab B/A B B/A B/Ab B/A
"I see," said a blind builder to his deaf daughter as he picked up his hammer and saw,
B B/A B/Ab B/A B B/A B/Ab B/A
"if blood is thicker than water why'd you dress in the dress that you wore?"
C#m7 Amaj7 B6 C7
The blind are drawn by a blank curiosity
C#m7 Amaj7 B6 C7
Don't bring 'em up if you can't put 'em down
C#m7 Amaj7 B6 C7
Drawn on mirrors where windows used to be
C#m7 Amaj7 B6 C7
Don't bring 'em up if you can't put 'em down
B7 A7 E
Some people might say "My desire's not the captain of me!"
B7 A7 Ab7
And Red Barry might fly from his pedestal at night to spook the university...
C#m7 Amaj7 B6 C7
Don't bring 'em up if you can't put 'em down,
C#m7 Amaj7 B6 C7 C#m7
Thin Captain Crackers bowling naked through the centre of the town,
Amaj7 B6 C7 B7? A7 E (E E E E E E E E E E E E!!!!! Awesome.)
The sun won't bake his blue skin brown, he's been too long underground.
E F#m7
O tailor my bones what need new clothes but the lower half loves what the upper half loathes
Abm7 Am6
I could get around like an intellectual, I suppose, wearing the highs with the lows,
E F#m7
But I'd sooner sing these doleful drones by barcoo dog and lagerphones,
Abm7 Am6
But my hand don?t write when a feather it holds, it hangs like a wren with its neck wrung,
E F#m7
As did the bells in my quasi commode where I have to shift my head to see where my pillow go'd,
Abm7
Some mornings I wake up by the side of the road,
Am6
Bringing it up for the gutter,
Am6
After putting it down for the crowd
B5 A5 Ab5 A5
B5 A5 Ab5 A5 B5 A5 Ab5 A5
I said I would arrive in the capital
B5 A5 Ab5 A5 B5 A5 Ab5 A5
After chuckin' outside the St. Augustines purple parish hall (...if you can't put 'em down)
E
And you know I can't.
If you're not into the jazz chords thing, go ahead and play straight majors for the 6 and 7 chords or minors
for the m7 and m6 chords. It's just the sevenths make it sound better, and truer to the song.
As far as chord voicings go, I use primary barre chords for the parts that aren't B B/A B/Ab B/A, i.e.
C#m7 Amaj7 B6 C7 B7 A7 E F#m7 Abm7 Am6 B5 A5 Ab5
E|-x----x-----x--x--x--x--0-x----x----x-----------|
B|-9----5-----7--8--7--5--0-2----4----5-----------|
G|-9----6-----8--9--8--6--1-2----4----5-----------|
D|-9----6-----6--8--7--5--2-2----4----4---9--7--6-|
A|-x----x-----x--x--x--x--2-x----x----x---9--7--6-|
E|-9----5-----7--8--7--5--0-2----4----5---7--5--4-|
And finally, the only chord I'm not sure about is the B7 with the question mark.

NB:
G#(ish) could be called a G#b3#5, but let's say it's like a G#.
I think it sounds about right anyway.
